Uh Oh Ohio! Shale Gas!

The rebirth of natural gas development in the Utica region in southeast Ohio, has caused a dilemma with the state, who is need of an economic boost. The Utica region is thought to have an abundance of natural gas and crude oil, which will stimulate major jobs in the area.

Hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling are the methods to extract the fuels, but fracturing poses a major environmental problem. Drilling can damage the local underground water supply. Ohioans want jobs, but they don't want the environmental degradation that can occur. Environmental groups are calling for more regulations that holds the oil industry responsible. 

With national election in the upcoming months, politicians will have to take a stance on the manner. The republicans are for drilling. President Obama supports natural gas development, but thinks sound environmental practices are needed.

I think natural gas development would be the next best alternative to crude oil, right now. But I would like to see that the industry is held responsible for drilling and regulations monitor the environmental impact.
